Central North Island Wood Council
Providing a unified voice to advocate for the region’s interests.

About CNIWC

The Central North Island’s integrated production forestry sector is recognised globally as a prime example of a bio-circular economy and community kaitiakitanga. To maintain and promote this model for the forestry sector, the Central North Island Wood Council (CNIWC) serves as a membership organisation which aims to ‘lift the profile of the industry’ by enabling our organisation to influence, contribute, initiate and/or facilitate work that will benefit the industry.

In addition to providing industry support and advocacy, the CNIWC hosts the annual Central North Island Wood Council Awards, which acknowledge and honour the exceptional achievements of local individuals, contractors, and forestry organisations.

Our key projects include the ‘Generation Programme’ an introductory training programme with employment and/or further education pathways. The ‘Simulator Training PODs’ - two state of art containerised mobile simulator training PODs developed to provide training offerings in remote locations.

Our work includes the BOP Regional Council Liaison Group which aims to facilitate transparent communication and cooperation between regulating authorities and the forest industry for better environmental outcomes. The CNI Health & Safety forum which aims to facilitate the discussion of industry wide health and safety issues for better health and safety outcome.

We recently signed up to a Wood Council Accord that enables us to work more closely with the other seven Wood Councils of NZ to promote and protect the interest of our industry. Under the Accord we will also work closer with our national bodies such as Farm Forestry Association, Forest Owners Association, Wood Processing and Manufacturing Association and the Forest Industry Contractors Association on matters national interests.
Discover Forestry is an all-Wood Council collaboration delivering a range of forestry programmes for Primary Schools – ‘Wood is Good’, for Secondary Schools – ‘Grow Me’ and for women in the forestry sector either in work or studying – ‘Wahine in Forestry’.

With a rich history of forestry and wood processing in our region, we’re committed to continuing this legacy by championing the sector’s growth and development. By becoming a member of the CNIWC you will join us in this vital work and help shape a brighter future for the industry.

Membership is open to any organisation or individual involved in our industry, including contractors, forest owners and managers, processors, education providers, researchers and governance.
